I’m not going to use this blog to call for Ai Weiwei’s release. I would doubt too many Chinese Communist Party officials are regular visitors here. Apart from his Sunflower Seeds exhibition at the Tate, I didn’t know too much about him. But having looked him up after recent events, it’s clear what an important, innovative and, above all, brave artist he is. I love the audacity of having his wife flash in front of Mao’s Mausoleum. As political comments go, you don’t get much stronger. Also, his dig at the ruling party’s hypocritical courting of western consumerism by plastering the Coca-Cola logo on the side of a Ming vase. Oh, what the hell: FREE AI WEIWEI!
