Anticipating James Franco’s new book of short stories, Palo Alto, made me recall Larry Clark’s Kids, his low-budget 1995 movie about delinquent teenagers in New York City. It spawned a whole load of not-so-good copycats as well as the careers of Chloe Sevigny and future director Harmony Korine. Interestingly, while Sevigny and Korine have gone on to great things, Leo Fitzpatrick, who played the main character Telly, has played mainly minor roles. Fitzpatrick, who was discovered by Clark in a skate park when he was 14 years old, told a magazine in 2002: “I have issues with being an actor. It’s a stupid business. I want to quit every day and go work at McDonalds.”
