Manny who? Most boxing folk won’t waste a second before declaring Manny Pacquiao their fighter of 2010. After all, the Filipino could make a slightly spurious claim to winning a world title in an eighth weight division when he beat Antonio Margarito in December. But even Pacquiao’s achievements pale compared to those of Mexican bantamweight Fernando Montiel. Montiel won four fights inside four rounds in 2011. He twice successfully defended his WBO title, and went to Japan to beat Hozumi Hasegawa and add Hasegawa’s WBC belt. Hasegawa had reigned unbeaten as champion since 2005, and entered the fight on the back of five straight knockout wins. Yet Montiel clubbed him to defeat in four rounds. In February Montiel is due to face hard-hitting former flyweight champion Nonito Donaire. It could be one of the fights of 2011.
